Toronto Digital City Lab speaker series

Description

This is a speaker series organized by the members of Toronto Digital City Lab members.

Barbara Crow and Michael Longford, aided by their graduate assistant Sanja Obradovic organized throughout the fall of 2009 and winter of 2010 series of talks around Toronto Digital City Labs. The talks which featured international as well as local researchers and thinkers, aimed to bring together researchers, artists and graduate students from various labs working on digital media and technologies at York and Ryerson Universities, namely Mobile Media Lab, Play:CES Lab, Future Cinema/Augmented Reality Lab and Infoscape Lab.
The talks which took place in these labs touched upon various issues regarding digital media, from gender identities in New Zealand’s students- computer users researched by Jane Abbiss (Cantenbury University, New Zealand) and social and cultural context of free electricity explored by Gary Genosko (Lakehead University) to lessons learned from developing a mixed-reality heritage game for the iPhone presented by Kevin Kee (Brock University). Moreover, guest speakers discussed the impact of augmented reality on the social, cultural, educational, political, and business realms (Thomas Purves, Toronto blogger), as well as the role of Information and Communications Technologies within the cities in Brazil (Fabio Botelho Josgrilberg, Methodist University of São Paulo). Moreover, methodological issues of presenting digital code data were contemplated by Suzanne de Castell (Simon Frasier University).
